Figure Ground

Flow, rhythm, shape, and pattern: the Gestalt Principles are fundamental to good design. This project is an exploration of the relationship between figure and ground, the push and pull of the object and the background. Utilizing the Gestalt Principles, I consider various ways to create visually appealing figure ground relationships. Individually, each square offers an interesting composition made up of a single letter and number. Together, the squares flow into one another, spelling out “typography”. Legibility becomes almost entirely secondary as type is used as illustration.
