Music genres tend to correlate with certain types of narratives. Hip hop songs tell stories about life in New York City, while country songs tell stories about gun slinging cowboys. What happens when musicians create a narrative outside their genre? “Paul Revere” by the Beastie Boys and their hip hop take on this story of cowboy friendship was my inspiration for this project. I play with scale to depict the points of view of both a horse and a cowboy in a western standoff. In traditional comic storytelling the hero is portrayed in light colors while the villain is portrayed in dark, which I reference. While my design creates a narrative associated with cowboys, I illustrated text more reminiscent of urban graffiti to tie it back to the Beastie Boys city roots.
